Chatsworth

We went to Chatsworth on Wednesday and Beryl (our GPS) took us on the rather difficult route through Sheffield. I was attempting to bypass the city but missed a turn somewhere! After a long drive we finally made it. It was very impressive even with scaffolding on a lot of the building. The gardens were wonderful and the weather was perfect. There was a fashion exhibition on, which was interesting, but we would have preferred seeing the original furniture.

There were some wonderful displays of the family's history and also some special embroideries too.

 We then tried to get a photo of us with the house in the background and this duck decided to photobomb our picture. It just came out of the water and looked at us!

Manchester

On Tuesday, we caught the train to Manchester. We went on a walking tour of the city and it was very interesting to hear about the city's history, especially in the Industrial Revolution. Cotton was what was woven here and made this originally small town into a huge industrial city. The cotton flower was everywhere even on the floors of the Town Hall.

We had lunch then caught the free city bus around and then headed back home.

Holmfirth and Lyme Park

On Sunday, 7th May, we had a quiet day. So nice to relax a little after driving. We just went into Holmfirth nearby and bought some groceries. There just happened to be a folk festival on there with some very interesting dancing and costumes.

 I did appreciate the knitted bunting. In the evening we wandered to our local pub and had a delicious Sunday roast.

On Monday, we drove to Lyme House. What a lovely house to visit. Inside they had the story of Thomas Legh who inherited the house when he was 5 years old. He was the oldest son but was illegitimate and his father had 6 other children all by different mothers! The best part was the outside as this was the house used in the BBC series of Pride and Predjudice. Mr Darcy also walked out of the lake here! 

There was also some lovely embroidery in the house.

We then went into Buxton for a look around and afternoon tea and then headed home.
