Newcastle

On a drizzly Friday, we caught the train to Newcastle. We saw the well known bridges, the Grey Monument and the shopping street. Too rainy to stay long so headed back to Morpeth. Found a cute wool shop and enjoyed a chat to the lovely lady who runs it.

We stayed in an old courthouse/prison in Morpeth. It was quite interesting and there was a framed article on the wall in the apartment telling about the building's history. This photo makes it look very flash! The garden in front is a park across the busy road!

Falkland to Morpeth

On Wednesday, 14th August, we left Edinburgh and headed to Falkland. I wanted to see the town as it has Outlander connections too but the highlight was the Falkland Castle. It was amazing to visit and has had a long history. Mary, Queen of Scots. spent her early childhood here.

 We did visit a cute town called Peebles on the way but didn't take any pictures. We enjoyed morning tea and lunch there. We then headed to Morpeth in Northumberland. Our accommodation here was an old courthouse/prison!

On Thursday we headed to Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island. We went in the morning so we could drive across to the island at low tide. We heard about its amazing history from a National Trust guide.

 We then thought we would drive the coast road to see the beaches and little towns. Sadly it was very busy everywhere (school holidays) but was quite picturesque. We then stopped at a cute little place called Alnmouth and had afternoon tea in this lovely old schoolhouse.

We then headed back to Morpeth and I wandered into town. The sun came out and it was fun to check out the shops. We had Morrisons just up the road so we enjoyed some easy dinners at home in our apartment. 

Edinburgh

We enjoyed a delicious breakfast at our B&B and then caught the train into Edinburgh. It was buzzing in town as the Fringe Festival was on. We went on a walking tour which was great and then had lunch in the Library which was a bit quieter than everywhere else. We had a look at the New Town and then went up to the castle. It was amazing and we luckily went on a tour which was so interesting and informative. We looked at the Crown Jewels, the hall, the chapel, the museums and the view too.

Doune Castle, Culross and Edinburgh

We are home now but I will try and catch up on our adventures. On Monday, 12th August, we left Tyndram and headed towards Edinburgh. On the way we visited Doune castle which was well worth the visit. This castle has a long history and was recently used in the Outlander series.

 The other place on my list was the village of Culross. This village was also used in Outlander. Sadly we couldn't go into the small palace as they had exprienced some flooding recently. Had lunch in the cafe, which was good.

 I especially liked this wonderful old building and recently they had uncovered these gorgeous painted ceilings!

We did try to visit Stirling Castle but it was so busy and there was no parking!

We then headed to Dalgety Bay where we stayed in a delightful B&B. This was the view from our window!
