Galleries

On Friday, a few of us went to see the wonderful potraits by Ralph Heimans at the Portrait Gallery. They are amazing and we especially liked the backgrounds which set the scene so well.

We then walked over to the National Gallery to look at the very special quilt exhibition. It was wonderful to see the Rajah quilt again.

Masterpieces from Paris

We went with Ma and Pa on Monday to see the Masterpieces from Paris exhibition at the National Gallery. Luckily we had bought our tickets on the internet and had lined up early and so we had a wonderful time seeing these very special paintings from the Musee D'Orsay. The lines as we left the gallery were very long. Last year we went to the Musee in Paris on a Monday! Bad idea as it is closed.
Ma loved this amazing painting by Albert Besnard. Her lovely white dress sparkled. Ma paints and she really appreciated this one. We all loved seeing the Starry Night by Van Gogh. The colours were so brilliant it could have been painted yesterday.
This is Van Gogh's bedroom at Arles.
It was lovely to see Monet's Waterlily pond, green harmony.
You can see all the paintings and read about them at http://nga.gov.au/exhibition/masterpiecesfromparis/Default.cfm?MnuID=3&GalID=0

National Art Gallery

We went to the National Art Gallery after church to see the new Frederick McCubbin exhibition and to have lunch. The paintings were amazing. He painted in the 1800's and until 1917 and his style changed amazingly after a trip to Europe in 1907. It is a very worthwhile exhibition to see. Later in the year they are having an exhibition from the Musee D'Orsey in Paris. It was closed on Monday when we tried to visit last year so we are looking forward to seeing those paintings.

McCubbin painted lots of paintings in and around Melbourne and many of his own backyard. See his "chooks" in the one above and his children in the one below.
Lunch was very good too!
